Introduction to Book Repair and Restoration...This 2 day class is a hands-on introduction to evaluating and correcting book problems and damage. Different book structures will be examined as they relate to repair, restoration and conservation of cloth, leather and other binding materials. The focus is on the techniques, materials and products used by professional binders. No experience required, beginners to advanced levels welcome.

Leather Bindings with Metal Clasps...Dea team-teaches with metal engraver Tom Patterson.. Students will construct leather bound books and learn to create bronze and brass clasps and closures for their books. Some book experience is helpful. Metal experience not needed. Refer to FS website.
Oct 9 - 15, 2011 - John C. Campbell Folk School, Brasstown NC
Beginning to Intermediate Book Repair...Bring damaged books to learn repair and restoration techniques as practiced by professional binders. Topics include recovering, resewing, paper and hinge cleaning and repair, refurbishing of leather, deacidification, cleaning and resizing cloth, titling/tooling with gold and cosmetic use of pigments and dyes. You also have the option of constructing a traditional book from raw materials.
March 25 - 31, 2012 - John C. Campbell Folk School, Brasstown NC
Traditional Book Repair and Restoration...Learn the techniques used by professional hand bookbinders to evaluate and correct book problems in your own books and library. Beginners and returning students will further advance their skills and knowledge in cleaning and repairing paper, cloth and leather; restore broken joints and hinges; reback, condition and preserve their books for longer use. The interests and projects of the students will help focus the specific areas of concentration.
